some common questions
What makes Chiropractic Rehabilitation different?
At Chiropractic Rehabilitation our experience helps us understand that there is no such thing as a short cut to ensuring long term health, wellbeing and happiness. This is why any treatment we provide also contains a strong focus on continued rehabilitation, exercise and posture therapy. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you need to come and see us every few days, but rather that ongoing management and a solid plan, often containing elements that you can achieve by yourself throughout your day, are what will deliver you the best results. This is our commitment to providing you with long term solutions rather than just short term relief.
What makes my treatment so unique?
I follow a particular style of treatment called Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation.
This is an innovative 21st-century approach to treatment. It is technically explained in our ‘About Us’ section but, if this sounds a bit confusing, another way of thinking about it is to look at your body as a computer. Now, in the early stages of your development there’s a lot of internal programming that needs to happen in order for you to develop the structure and skills necessary to let you crawl, then walk. Most of this programming happens in your locomotor system, which is responsible for all your movement and development of muscles, joints, discs, nerves and soft tissue. Our bodies develop these programs and then files them away in the same way that a computer does and, in the same way it can happen to a computer, they can then develop viruses and become corrupt – through all kinds of things such as overuse, injury, bad posture or stress. This is what leads to sore joints, poor movement and a number of other issues. Using a technique called Reflex Locomotion, we can use positioning and stimulation points to basically ‘reboot’ your body’s system, so that all these programs can be cleaned and uncorrupted, letting your locomotor system start working as effectively and efficiently as in your childhood.
What training do Chiropractors require?
Chiropractic is one of the fastest growing medical disciplines in the world, with more and more people benefiting from treatment than ever before. Every Chiropractor practising in Australia is required to firstly complete an accredited 5-year Masters of Chiropractic program at University before adhering to strict and extensive requirements in order to become government registered and regulated healthcare professionals.
Who benefits from chiropractic care?
Chiropractic is most commonly associated with the treatment of back and neck pain but can be used to treat a wide range of ailments, including migraine and headache, pinched nerves, sports injuries, knee and hip injuries, scoliosis and muscular and tissue complaints and can be effective in alleviating lifestyle issues such as stress and anxiety. At Chiropractic Rehabilitation we use traditional tools of Chiropractic to treat your condition, such as soft tissue therapy and manipulative and non-manipulative mobilisation techniques of the spine and peripheral joints, but we also believe that a strong focus on rehabilitation, exercise and posture therapy is required for successful long term improvement.
And you don’t have to be a certain age or level of mobility to seek treatment; Chiropractic is as safe and effective on newborns as it is on the elderly or women during pregnancy.
When is the right time to seek treatment?
Chiropractic involves an overall view of the human body, ensuring that all systems are working together to help promote wellness, so it can be just as important to your general wellbeingto have regular check-ups regardless of whether you are faced with any discomfit or injury.Of course, if you are in the unfortunate position of requiring treatment it is ideal to see a Chiropractor as soon as possible. The good news is that Chiropractic can be used to treat all manor of ailments, regardless of the time elapsed since they happened, so it’s never too late to seek relief. In fact, one of the most famous cases of Chiropractic care comes from one of the founders of the profession, D.D Palmer, back in 1895, when a patient who had suffered 17 years of severely reduced hearing had their hearing almost fully restored through spinal manipulation (this is not a cure for deafness)!
What to expect during your treatment?
One of the main discomfits people face when going to see any medical professional is the prospect of ending up wearing a backless gown in a room full of strangers! Chiropractic Rehabilitation is a family friendly centre so you can expect the utmost respect, discretion and care taken during the course of your treatment. The fact is that a lot of Chiropractic therapy can be completed without you having to remove any of your clothes and, if we do require you to remove any items, you can be sure that you’ll be in a comfortable and respectful environment. Another important aspect of Chiropractic treatment is that it is gentle, relaxing and often relieving, making it a safe and effective treatment for your whole family. It is important to remember that Chiropractors use their skill and knowledge of your body, not force or strength, to conduct your treatment.Click here to read our Guide to Surviving Your 1st Chiropractic Treatment
How should you prepare for a treatment?
If this is your first time visiting it would be beneficial to bring along any past medical records relating to injuries or disease and be prepared to answer a few questions about your medical history. The better the picture of your health and body we can piece together, the more effectively we will be able to either pinpoint the reason for your pain or discomfit, or put together the most effective and relevant wellbeing program for your needs. So if you have any x-rays or scans please bring them along. Apart from that, come in whatever clothes you feel comfortable in and don’t forget your private healthcare card!
What’s that clicking sound?!
There are a few different techniques that Chiropractors use to realign the body in the course of treatment. Depending on the patient, a Chiropractor can use a small hand held instrument, their hands or their body weight to make any necessary adjustments. Sometimes this can result in a clicking sound coming from the spine or neck which, of course, is usually cause for alarm! If this happens, don’t worry, the click is just the sound of gas being released from your joints and this release will usually leave a feeling of pressure release and relief.

Will I always need to come back?
At Chiropractic Rehabilitation West Ryde our main focus is Rehabilitation. This means as you start to recover and your body’s ability to respond to exercise, stretches and core activation is favourable, we start implementing your own personal exercise program to compliment your recovery through our DNS treatment. Prevention is the key to any long term health care program so, through the right knowledge, experience and advice it is unlikely you will need excessive frequent care. However, good preventative care means regular reviews of your spine and joints throughout the year can help detect problems before they arise.
Have you found what you’re looking for?
Chiropractic comes from the Greek word “Chiropraktikos”, which means ‘done by hand’. While Chiropractic has been safely practised in Australia for over 100 years it seems there are a few people who would still prefer the Greek version – a lot of my requests are from people looking for kiropraktic! Of course, we don’t expect everyone to be spelling experts, so whether you are looking for a Chiropracter, Kyropractor or even a Chiropractice, we’ll be able to help!
